BUS490 Business Seminar (IN) during May 2024 in Ireland!!

In May 2024, Dr. Angie Donovan served as the instructor for BUS 490 in Ireland. You should talk to her if you want to learn more about the course!

Here are a few comments from Maddie Foels, one of the students on the May 2024 adventure:

  • The Titanic museum (in Belfast, NI) was an amazing experience. They did such a good job curating the museum and presenting it in a way that immersed the visitor to such an extent that I got emotional at several points.
  • Glendalough and the Wicklow Way were absolutely gorgeous. It was so peaceful to be in nature and see such a historic monastic town.
  • Kilkenny Castle was the first castle I had ever been too and not only was it pretty but so was the town of Kilkenny.
  • Howth was such an incredible hike and view right along the cliff side. I could not get over the view and the secret beach we went down to was beautiful.

Jon Broas offers a few thoughts:

  • First, I apologize for so many pictures, but I could not find only 5 that I liked (be sure to click on the text in this sentence to see Jon's pics).
  • I really enjoyed the day we traveled to Belfast to tour the Titanic Museum. We first stopped in Belfast to pick up our tour guide who knew almost everyone in the town. He showed us around and explained the history of the town and the “peace” wall. He took us around to see multiple murals that had true emotion behind them. After that, he took us to sign the peace wall. After a quick walk around a Catholic Church, we parted ways and went to the Titanic Museum. I found the Titanic Museum to be very fascinating because I have always been interested in the history of the Titanic. The building has 5 points that are the size of the actual bow of the Titanic. Once inside, I learned multiple different things that I did not already know. I learned that the river nearby was actually redirected to make it easier for bigger ships to travel through which made trading easier. I also learned about the economic boom that was created from the building of the Titanic. My favorite part was the section that showed the ships morse code conversations with surrounding ships before and after hitting the iceberg. I also really enjoyed the section that talked about discovering the ship.
  • Another experience that I really enjoyed was when we hiked in Glendalough. I found the whole hike to be really peaceful and soothing. It was very nice to be able to walk around in nature and listen to the birds and other sounds that you would not hear in a normal city. I also thought the scenery enhanced everything. I genuinely lost myself in the forest, and I was okay with that.
  • Lastly, I want to talk about the overall camaraderie of the trip. I went into the trip only knowing Jimmy and Gannon. I knew other students through classes that I have taken during my time at Loras, but I could not tell you their favorite color. Over the trip, I was able to get to know a majority of the class, and would even go so far as to say that they are really good friends now. I am very thankful for the trip and will never forget about it.
  • If you want me to expand upon any more of my stories please let me know. Sincerely, Jon Broas

A quote from Megan Murray:

  • I recently returned from an incredible study abroad experience in Ireland, where I completed my business seminar class. This international exposure not only broadened my horizons but also provided unique insights into global business practices. The rich cultural experiences and the opportunity to learn in a different environment have been truly transformative.

Two stories from Patrick Julian:

  1. We made (a) big trek up to Northern Ireland, specifically Belfast to see the peace wall and the Titanic Museum. I am not a museum person by any means, but I was absolutely blown away by the Titanic Museum. It was more of an experience than a museum. It was so immersive, invoked emotion, and I learned so much about the creation, launch, and demise of the Titanic. It was my biggest highlight from the trip and I would have never gone to the museum on my own.
  2. I was nervous going on a trip abroad with other students that were not my closest friends. But, to my surprise, I grew so close with everyone on the trip and enjoyed spending time with and getting to know new people. It was a joy to make new connections and share this awesome experience with these people!

A few thoughts from Aubrey Horbach:

  • ...I've never been to Europe before, so it was something I really wanted to experience. It was all better than what I expected, and my favorite days were when we went hiking or went to the museums. (Prof. Donovan) planned everything out really well and I like how busy we were every day. The class work was also less than expected and I didn't think it was too much work to do while we were in Ireland. Thank you for encouraging me to go and telling me about it!
