This example from page 039 in the text demonstrates Phrase Elements. Phrase Elements indicate the content and meaning of the text between the container tags. The browser you use determines the style they display in.

ABBR - an abbreviation

B - Bold text (deprecated)

CITE - identifies a citation or reference

CODE - program code samples; usually in fixed-space font

DFN - identifies a definition of a word or term; usually displayed in italics

EM - emphasized text; usually displayed in italics

I - italicized text (deprecated)

KBD - identifies USER text to be typed ("KeyBoarD" input)

MARK - text that's highlighted to be easily referenced

SAMP - program SAMPLE output usually a fixed-space font

SMALL - small font size used for legal disclaimers & notices

STRONG - strong importance stand out from surrounding text, usually bold

SUB - SUBscript small text below the baseline

SUP - SUPerscript small text above the baseline

VAR - a variable or program output usually displayed in italics
