EME 236 Properties and Mechanics of Materials           4 credits

Pre: MAT160,EME106,EME231

Description:
This course provides an introduction to materials and  solid mechanics.  This includes understanding how the microscopic scale properties impact the macroscopic properties (stress-strain, hardness, deflection, fatigue, and creep) of typical engineering materials.  Topics in solid mechanics include deformation, strain, stress, Mohr's circle, shear and bending moment diagrams, simple structural members (axial truss members, shafts in torsion, beams in extension and bending, columns and buckling, pressure vessels).  The class also included FEA modeling of stress and strain, limited experiments with materials, and a design project with a focus on structural strength and performance.

Objectives:
To provide an introduction to materials and solid mechanics including the study and quantitative determination of stress, strain, stability, deflection, fatigue, and creep.
To learn to analyze structures and predict failure of material under a variety of loading types.
To understand how altering geometry and shape can be used to minimize stress.
To apply CAD and FEA in the development and assessment of structural designs.
To practice design process and teamwork.

Meets:
Section 1:  MWF at 19:00 p.m. to 10:50 p.m. in Science 118
