GIVING TO THE LORAS FUND CHANGES LIVES

In their journey to become adults, students face many tough decisions. Your gifts to the Loras Fund makes choosing Loras easier for students such as Kemunto Ondande (’19).

Since 1839, Loras has made a positive impact on the lives of its students and Kemunto is no exception. Supporting the Loras Fund helps ensure the cost to attend Loras remains competitive with other colleges and universities. Your gift has an immediate impact on students by funding every aspect of life at Loras.

Kemunto is a mathematics and secondary education major who is also earning a minor in coaching. She is the 21-year-old daughter of John (’90) and Wendy (Dunbar) Ondande (’95) of Oak Park, Illinois, and the sister of Sagana, Moruri, Misian and Yobes Ondande.

John Ondande is from Kenya. In Swahili, the national language of Kenya, Kemunto means “strong, female leader.”

At Loras, Kemunto has been a leader of the Duhawk cross country and track and field teams. She also has been involved in the Loras Math Club, DuBuddies mentoring program and Spiritual Life, serving as a Eucharistic minister, lector and community leader.

SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED BY FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN MEMORY OF BILL SKEMP (’61)

Bill Skemp

Family, friends and former classmates remember the late Bill Skemp (’61) as a smart and thoughtful problem solver who was a business and community leader in Dubuque for nearly six decades. Thanks to their efforts to establish the William “Bill” F. Skemp Memorial Scholarship, he will be remembered forever at Loras College.

Bob Wahlert, who graduated with Skemp from Loras Academy in 1957, conceived the idea of honoring his friend with a memorial scholarship. With his wife, Donna, Wahlert made the first gift to start the scholarship. Other friends are joining with members of the Skemp family to raise at least $25,000 for the scholarship. They are within $10,000 of their goal. Once the goal is reached, the scholarship will be used to help students from the tri-state area who are majoring in accounting, computer science or another business-related field.

PHONATHON SHOWS
STUDENT THE IMPACT
OF GIVING

Cora Shefchik

Name: Cora Shefchik
Age: 19
Hometown: Green Bay, Wisconsin
Year in School: Sophomore
Major: Elementary Education with Early Childhood Education and Special Education endorsements

What was the most memorable story you heard from someone you called during Phonathon? I spoke to one alumna who made a donation. She gives every year. In fact, she said she wished she could give more. I told her every dollar helps so whatever she was able to give would be greatly appreciated by me and my fellow Duhawks. During training, it was demonstrated how important giving is to the College. To hear how much people love Loras, and how their gifts are benefitting me, is pretty cool.

How did your experience with the Phonathon change your view on philanthropy at Loras? Has it made you more aware of the help you have received from donors? It is inspiring to see all of the people who donate to Loras College regularly. All of the Duhawks I spoke with had great experiences while they were at Loras. They want to give back to ensure my peers and I have great experiences, too. Due to the generous support of those who give to Loras, I have received numerous scholarships to help make Loras more affordable. I feel truly blessed and grateful to those individuals who faithfully support the College. READ FULL ARTICLE

LORAS AIMS
TO CELEBRATE
SUCCESS WITH NEWSLETTER

In Latin, caritas is a noun with definitions that include the Christian love of humankind, charity. It is the name we have chosen for this newsletter, Caritas: Duhawks Supporting Duhawks. The name and slogan were chosen because they tie in to Catholic tradition at Loras and the history of continued generosity displayed by our alumni, parents, friends and other longstanding supporters. The Advancement Office at Loras College will publish Caritas three times annually.

We look forward to celebrating and sharing the successes made possible by the thousands of Duhawks who generously support current and future students and the initiatives launched to make the Loras experience even better.
